Children's Rights: Our Priority

Jun 22, 2022

For every child, every right.

Children play an important role in a society's development. They represent the citizens and consumers of the future who will develop attitudes and make decisions. Their upbringing is relevant since it will significantly impact their later stages.

Putting ourselves in context, in 1989, world leaders made a historic commitment with the world's children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international agreement on childhood. Over the years, this agreement has become the most widely ratified human rights treaty, with the sole purpose of transforming children's lives around the globe.

For every child, every right.

For the full and harmonious development of the personality, each child must grow in a family environment, in a climate of happiness, love, and understanding, with a spirit of peace, dignity, tolerance, freedom, equality, and solidarity. Unfortunately, still, not all children can enjoy a dignified childhood and a happy home. There are many children who suffer and whose rights are violated

Learn about some of the children's rights according to UNICEF:

  •  Children must be registered at birth and given a name that is officially recognized by the government. Children must have a nationality (to belong to a country). Whenever possible, children should meet their parents and be cared for by them.
  • Children have the right to use their own language, culture, and religion, even if the majority of the people in the country where they live do not share them.
  • Every child has the right to be alive. Governments must ensure that children survive and develop in the best possible way.

  • Every child with a disability should enjoy the best possible life in society. Governments must remove all obstacles so that they can become independent and can actively participate in the community.
  • Children can choose their own thoughts, opinions, and religion, but this should not prevent other people from enjoying their rights. The Parents can guide their children so that, as they grow, they can learn to use this right correctly.
  • Every child has the right to rest, relax, play, and participate in cultural and creative activities.
  • Children should not be separated from their parents unless they are being cared for properly. For example, for example, if a parent hurts or does not take care of a child. Children whose parents do not live together must stay in contact with both parents unless this could harm the child.
  • Every child has the right to education. Primary education should be free. Secondary and higher education must be available to all the children. Children should be encouraged to attend school to the highest possible level. Discipline in schools must respect the rights of the children and never use violence.

No child should be treated unfair for any reason!

Unfortunately, in 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a health, humanitarian, socio-economic, and human rights crisis, which has exacerbated the vulnerability of affected children around the world and has made it more difficult for NGOs to impact the needs of the little ones.

UNICEF wrote a report that can illustrate the delicate panorama of today's situation in some of the most affected countries due to conflicts, the climate change, and economic instability:

  • 5 million children under the age of 5 die of causes related to malnutrition each year.
  • Crisis in education. In Latin America and the Caribbean, about 60% of all children and adolescents lost a full school year due to COVID-19 lockdowns.
  • Migration crisis. Venezuela: 3.2 million children within the country and 4.3 million children urgently need humanitarian assistance.
  • Refugees and migrants in Europe. Between January and August 2020, almost 50,000 refugees and migrants arrived in Europe. 25% of them children, which are very vulnerable and require urgent care and protection.
  • Health crisis. Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 11 millions of children need humanitarian assistance. In 2020, two separate outbreaks of Ebola hit the country.
  • Poverty crisis. USA: about 16.8% of children under 18 live in poverty.
